Feds stonewall release of Bombardier emissions analysis

Author: Colin Craig 2017/11/30
  • ATIPs indicate emissions analysis for Bombardier deal is confidential, Ford received funding without feds evaluating emissions impact
  • TransCanada is required to do larger, public emissions review

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released Access to Information (ATIP) responses today that indicate the federal government gave Ford $102 million earlier this year without conducting any emissions impact analysis. A second ATIP response indicated the government is refusing to release emissions analysis for the recent $373 million Bombardier deal.

“Taxpayers paid for analysis that looked into Bombardier’s carbon dioxide emissions so taxpayers should get to see it,” said CTF Interim Alberta Director Colin Craig. “It’s outrageous to make TransCanada engage in a very public environmental review while keeping analysis about Bombardier’s emissions private.”

In 2016, the Financial Post documented 35 projects worth $129 billion that were in limbo.

“We’re not sure what’s more ridiculous that Bombardier keeps getting taxpayer cash handed to it on a silver platter or that the government keeps obstructing and delaying massive resource development projects,” continued Craig. “Obstructing these projects means governments lose out on billions in foregone tax revenue, putting even more pressure on everyday taxpayers to pay more.”
